Unplug & Recharge
We were chatting to a couple of honeymooners just recently and asked what their favorite part of their trip was, and the answer was surprising, it wasn’t the usual, amazing sights, sounds and wildlife, but the fact that they had actually disconnected to connect with each other! After a crazy busy lead up to their wedding with all the organizing, they decided that on their honeymoon, they would switch their phones off for a week, take pictures with DSLR cameras (not their phones!) and they totally unplugged!
With our natural tendency to check our texts or Whatsapps, post on social media, and ask Google or Siri the answer to our nagging questions, it’s easier said than done!
We are inviting you to take this opportunity to pack your bags and be spectacularly present for the many rewards you’ll reap by stepping out of your daily routine. From wildlife encounters, stunning river cruise sunsets, getting soaked in the spray of the Victoria Falls to mouthwatering meals and immersive entertainment. Swap screen time for well-deserved “me time” with these tips to help you reconnect your sense of wonder!
Give yourself permission to Disconnect
The decision to unplug can be life changing if you let it. There’s no need to be totally out of reach or keep your phone off ALL the time. Small, intentional changes make all the difference.
You don’t need to share everything in real time, you can savour the day and save social media posting for the end of your journey when you’ve saved the experiences to memory or journaled at the end of each day. Allow that out-of-office auto reply to direct requests to the person covering for you.
Travel is an incredible teacher, so embrace this awesome opportunity to get an A in a lesson in living.
Go Old School
Take a paper map with you to map your journey, (some places in remote African Villages don’t have wifi so this might be a life saver of a travel tip!) Take books to read, and a pack of cards to play games at the airport whilst waiting for your flight. These days it’s too easy to pull out your phone and endlessly scroll through instagram or Facebook or YouTube. Entertainment is at your fingertips ALL THE TIME on screen, and you miss out on being real with the people that you are with in real time.
Take a Dip in Unchartered Waters
Well, uncharted for you, at least. Take a dip in the Devil’s Pool at the top of Victoria Falls - an invigorating, and thrilling experience that revives your body, mind and spirit and washes away the nagging stresses of day-to-day life.
Water in any state has a physiological effect on your body that lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, which means diving in, getting soaked in a rainforest or even lounging poolside invites the opportunity to disconnect and experience the magic of the present.
Learn from the Children
Watch and learn from the small ones! Take a journey into an African Village and watch the children laugh and dance and sing with no cares in the world. The majority of village children do not have a cell phone and grow up happy and connected without the disconnect! A local Village Tour will leave you feeling incredibly privileged and alive and fully present.
